Many of our ionic liquids are biodegradable and hence they are benign (non-hazardous) liquids, which can be used in domestic applications. They also exhibit the ability to dissolve a wide variety of materials. This, coupled with the low production costs associated with the raw materials, would make them ideal candidates for use as cleaners both in the household and in an industrial environment.
Some examples of what ionic liquids can dissolve:
  • Dissolves a wide range of solutes
  • Salts e.g. limescale, bleaches, metal tarnishes
  • Fats
  • Proteins and amino acids
  • Surfactants, anionic, cationic and non-ionic, these can then be used to solubilise oils
  • Sugars and polysaccharides
Solvent properties can be ‘tuned’ for a given application depending on the ionic liquid.
